New Indian felt film

Nidhi Kamath and Keya Vaswani have made their next film about craft in India for the design studio Anantaya in Jaipur – and it’s about feltmaking!

I got the impression when I visited  Karim Umar Mansuri in Gujarat that felting in India wasn’t very widespread, but when researching it on the interweb found out that Tonk in Rajasthan seemed to be a centre for the craft – and this is where the film was made.

As you will see, there is definitely rubbing and rolling involved in this process, including by foot!  And the method of laying it out is interesting. The felt produced, however, seems quite functional rather than artistic or decorative.

Congratulations to Nidhi and Keya on another charming film – the guy resting on the felt “mattresses” surely deserves a rest after all that effort! 🙂

Flextiles uses shibori, ecoprinting and felting to create original, one-off upcycled pieces. Extending the life of a garment by an extra nine months reduces its environmental impact by 20-30%.
